            The Methodist Episcopals came into Canada from the States with the Loyalists around 1790, the first Methodists in Canada. There were various groupings. Information on Methodist Episcopal churches from 1791 to 1833 can be found in Cornish, Rev George H - Cyclopedia of Methodism in Canada, vol 1 (1881) UCA: BX8251.C6 They were not very active in Peterborough County.

            In 1833, the Methodist Episcopals and the British Wesleyans united to form the Wesleyan Methodist Church in Canada. However there was a breakaway group who remained as the Methodist Episcopal Church in Canada. It was one of the churches forming The Methodist Church in 1884.

            From 1843, the Peterborough area was in the Bay of Quinte Conference.
